The M3 River Boyne Bridge is a 114m long three span structure crossing the River Boyne, South of Navan in Co Meath, Ireland. The bridge is part of the M3 Motorway from Clonee to North of Kells in Co Meath, 64 km of motorway constructed as a PPP by Eurolink.
The brief required the bridge design to reflect the nature of the adjacent multispan 18th century masonry arch Ballinter Bridge, and the bridge construction could not interfere with the river.
The design was for a 3 span structure with steel girders, with a curved arch profile, made integral with concrete piers and supported on bearings at the abutments. The piers are set back from the river banks, providing a 52m skew span, and clad with masonry, to appear “heavy” reflecting the arch bridge. Abutments are also clad in masonry. The bridge has a solid concrete parapet which also reflects the masonry parapet on the 18th Century bridge.
